Volunteer Connections/RSVP Tutor Program

Volunteer Connections/RSVP Tutor Program

Volunteer Connections/RSVP recruits and interviews interested volunteers, matching their skills, talents, interests, and time availability to appropriate volunteer assignments. We have agreements with over 250 non-profit organizations, hospitals, nursing homes, schools and government agencies where volunteers can assist. Volunteer Connections/RSVP also works with organizations to identify meaningful volunteer opportunities and develop innovative assignments that meet specific community needs. Volunteer Connections/RSVP serves Clark County and the cities within its boundaries.
GOAL/MISSION:
“To connect the wisdom, experience, and talents of volunteers with opportunities to enrich the quality of life for themselves and their communities.”
WHO IS MENTORED?
Volunteer Connections/RSVP recruits volunteers for tutoring literacy and math, primarily in grades K-5. Volunteer Connections/RSVP also refers volunteers to serve as mentors with the school Lunch Buddy Program and other mentoring programs, if they are registered with Volunteer Connections/RSVP and have their job description on file.
CURRENT NUMBER OF MENTORS/MENTEES:
Approximately 80 pen-pal volunteers and about 70 volunteer tutors. Some volunteers work with multiple students.
WHO CAN BE A MENTOR?
Anyone who expresses a desire to work with children is interviewed, screened for appropriateness and willingness to work under school guidelines. Volunteers must pass a background check through the school.
TRAINING REQUIRED:
Volunteer tutors attend orientation and training when appropriate, provided by the schools.  Other volunteers are trained for their volunteer positions through the organization to which they are assigned.
TIME COMMITMENT REQUIRED:
For our tutoring program, a minimum of 1 hour per week, and volunteers are asked to commit to the full school year. Other placements depend on the specific program. Pen-pals are also asked to commit to the full school year.
CURRENT WAITING LIST:
Volunteer Connections/RSVP does not have a waiting list, but refers volunteers; however some schools need more volunteers than others.
